Gentamax 100 injection

Gentamicin 100 mg/mL (as the sulfate)

Gentamicin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic which is bactericidal by inhibiting protein synthesis in susceptible bacteria. Gentamicin is not significantly bound by animal protein and hence provides useful concentrations in peritoneal and pleural fluids. Its clearance rates may be reduced in cases of renal impairment, and prolonged courses are considered to be potentially nephrotoxic. Gentamicin should only be used when the target bacterial species is known to be sensitive to this antibiotic.

Gentamicin is effective against a range of gram-negative bacteria including: Actinobacillus sp., Klebsiella sp., Bordetella bronchiseptica, Enterobacter sp., Pseudomonas sp. and E.coli.

Gentamicin is indicated in infections which are known to be responsive to Gentamicin.

Horses:

• 6.6 mg/kg  every 24  hours (33 ml per 500kg horse), administer by slow intravenous injection only
• Mares: Intra-uterine infusion – 2.5 g, diluted in 400 mL sterile normal saline. Infuse once daily for 3 – 5 days during oestrus.

Camels*:

• 5 mg/kg once daily, subcutaneously, or intravenously (IV), for 5 days ONLY 1
• Dose accurately to weight
• Once daily dosing of an aminoglycoside is associated with less renal toxicity than multiple lower daily doses.

*Use extreme caution in camelids due to renal sensitivity – can cause death if used for over 5d, monitor kidney function and supplement with IV fluids.

WARNINGS:  Administration should not exceed 5 days.  Always consult label and leaflet for restraints, contraindications, precautions and side effects.
