Product information

Intravenous joint treatment with Pentosan, Glucosamine and Hyaluronic Acid, for horses and camels.

Each mL contains:

  • Pentosan Polysulfate 75 mg
  • N-Acetyl Glucosamine 120 mg
  • Sodium Hyaluronate 3 mg

Pentosan, Glucosamine and Hyaluronic Acid (HA) are well documented and utilised individually in the treatment of joint disease, yet their actions are closely linked. The logical combination of all 3 products for single intravenous injection aims to enhance the animal’s response to treatment.

Pentosan Polysulfate produces anti-inflammatory, anti-arthritic and chondroprotective effect via 5 Main Actions

Glucosamine is a fundamental building block of the cartilage structure and a growing body of evidence supports the pain-relieving and potentially chondroprotective properties of glucosamine.

N-Acetyl Glucosamine actively stimulates and provides substrate for the secretion of GAGs in articular cartilage, as well as exerting an anti-inflammatory effect and inhibiting degradation of the connective tissues of the joints.

Treatment using the combination of anti-arthritic agents Pentosan Polysulfate Sodium and NAG (AcetylGlucosamine) in PENTOSAN EVOLUTION may result in a greater anti-inflammatory effect than either active alone, which helps reduce joint swelling and improve mobility.

Sodium Hyaluronate is the sodium salt of the GAG HA which forms proteoglycans in the matrix of cartilage and provides visco-elastic and lubricating properties to joint fluid. In joint disease, inflammation breaks down HA which results in lowered viscosity of the joint fluid and further influx of inflammatory cells, exacerbating cartilage damage and joint disease. Supplementation with HA helps to restore lubrication of the joint, reduces inflammatory infiltrates and minimises ongoing damage.

In a placebo controlled trial 3 conducted by Professors McIlwraith and Dart at the University of Sydney, horses were treated with nine weekly injections of PENTOSAN EVOLUTION or placebo.  In joints with a chip, horses receiving Pentosan Evolution had lower radiographic scores (less

degenerative changes) and lower gross pathological scores (less pathology) compared to horses receiving saline. Cartilage fibrillation score and chondrocyte cloning scores were affected in horses receiving PENTOSAN EVOLUTION.  This supports a chondroprotective effect when using PENTOSAN EVOLUTION.

In Australian trials4 of the combination of actives in Evolution, veterinarians reported “Good” to “Very Good” response in 81% [67 of 83] of the osteoarthritic horses treated. Positive responses included improved gait, extension, racing performance and attitude. Also reported were reductions in pain on flexion, stiffness, joint effusion and soreness after racing.  When responses to this combination of actives were rated in comparison with the horses’ previous treatments with either pentosan or hyaluronic acid, 86% [63 of 73] were graded as “Better” or “Much Better”.

For intravenous administration to aid in the treatment of non-infectious inflammatory joint disease in horses and camels.

In particular:

  1. Osteoarthritis – especially with involvement of multiple joints
  2. Osteochondrosis dissecans
  3. Traumatic joint and peri-articular inflammation

An aid in the prevention of joint disease caused by cyclical/repetitive trauma.

Horses:

  • Give 2 – 4 mL per 100 kg bodyweight.
  • For an adult animal of 500 kg bodyweight administer 10 – 20 mL by INTRAVENOUS (IV) injection using a 21 gauge needle (or smaller).
  • Give every 5-7 days for 4 injections.

Vets recommend monthly booster injections following the 4 week course.  Ensure to repeat the course annually.

Camels:

  • Give by intravenous (IV) injection
  • 10 mL for small camels: higayg, ligaya & iddah
  • 10-15 mL for larger camels: thanayah, howl & gilesa
  • Give every 5-7 days for 4 injections.

Vets recommend monthly booster injections following the 4 week course.  Ensure to repeat the course annually.

PENTOSAN EVOLUTION may be administered regularly and/or as a strategic preparation for racing or strenuous work.

Users must adhere to local and racing regulations.
